MLL International Film Series - Chinese Film "The Story of Qiu Ju" (1992, Zhang Yimou)

Wednesday, October 19, 2016 - 6:00pm
Neville Hall, Room 003

The DEPARTMENT OF MODERN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES presents:

THE STORY OF QIU JU
Directed by the internationally acclaimed Zhang Yimou (Not One Less, Coming Home), The Story of Qiu Ju is a comedy set in China of the early 1990s.  The film stars renowned actress Gong Li (Farewell My Concubine, To Live) in the role of a peasant woman who fights for justice after her husband gets kicked in the groin by the village head.  Reflecting the disparity between the countryside and the city as well as the bureaucratic and legal labyrinths in contemporary China, The Story of Qiu Ju would win Best Film, and Gong Li Best Actress, at the 1992 Venice Film Festival.  In Mandarin Chinese with English subtitles.

This event is free and open only to Lehigh students/faculty/staff.

Light refreshments will be served after the film.
